Skill Builder: Knitting Increases and Decreases

You’ve got knitting and purling down, but now you want to do more than create squares/rectangles. Whether shaping a garment or creating a pattern within a fabric, various styles of increases and decreases can be used! In this skill builder, we’ll create a small swatch demonstrating several visible and invisible increases and directional decreases and touch on techniques to increase or decrease more than 1 stitch at a time.
1 two hour session
Skills Needed:
- Knitting and purling
- Ability to read charts is helpful but not strictly required
Skills Learned:
- Reading charts
- Yarnovers
- kfb
- M1L, M1R
- LLI, RLI
- K2tog, ssk
- Centered double decreases, double yarnovers
Materials:
- Yarn, preferably light colored, in a weight you enjoy working with, preferably non-splitty. If in doubt, default to worsted for a good middle-of-the-road weight.
- Needles of an appropriate size for your yarn
Preparation:
Cast on 20 stitches and knit at least 4 rows of garter stitch to start the class swatch
